My political post today is at Bizarro World here
Before you think I am obsessed with John Rich let me explain how I heard him for the first time. My boys are bigger country music fans than I am, really it is true. Any new singer or groups they like they show me a video or a play a song for me.
Big and Rich had a video out of Holy Water, which Dunk thought I would love. He showed me it, and I did love it. He did much the same for Rascal Flats, Randy Rogers Band, Eli Young and so on… There is no end to who they find.
This was Dunk’s freshman year in high school. I know that because his beloved Ag Mechanics coach was retiring, and anytime Dunk could spend with him I sent him. Dunk signed up for calf scrambles in Ft Worth and Houston. You go in and pray you are strong enough; level headed enough to grab a calf. Ft. Worth he went with his coach and another teacher, it was a dream come true because the coach took him to every tractor known under the sun. That was the beginning of his addiction to Ag Mechanics. Ft Worth has a smaller arena than Houston does; Dunk came close to grabbing one. The next rodeo was Houston. We as a family bought tickets to watch the rodeo, and see the opening act, which happened to be Big and Rich. The calf scramblers don’t pick the night, they just sign up and pray they get a good group. I must say we go to watch Jeff Foxworthy, Big and Rich and a Great Rodeo. It was a wonderful night. Jeff was never funnier, and I have seen him since the beginning. When Big and Rich came out the first thing they did was call up the soldiers. All military personnel had an up-close view.
By that time Holy Water was no longer the song, it was Ride a Horse Save a Cowboy. It was not my favorite song by a long shot. I watched what Big Kenny and John Rich did to honor those who serve because they want to, not because they have to. I was moved by the humble gesture. Later I heard Don Imus, Big and Rich and other celebrities had raised a lot of money for the San Antonio Burn Unit to help the military. They did not have to but they did it because they had the ability.
I will not regress on Don Imus only I have my take on that. The point of my point is sometimes you see talented singers, wonderful moments of kindness and you are moved. I was moved by Big Kenny and John Rich, John being a conservative and a Texan there is a special kinship I feel for him. I get his upbringing. My first boyfriend was a preacher’s son; truly, John in many ways is exactly like him.
Now with all the history I am including a wonderful video of John where he admits his flaws and sings a song from his heart. I just love it, and I wanted to share it with you. Is John partly a bad boy? Well yeah he is, which is why he is so intriguing. There is nothing more attractive than a man a bit dangerous, and Congrats John Rich on getting hitched!
Bama and Rob are famous in Austin. You want good country music you turn to them. They are no nonsense regular guys that love music as much as I do. BTW Happy Birthday Bama!
